an amazing night

An amazing night.  We had a packed house at the Finals Event of the Elevator Pitch Competition.
Many late nights finally coming to fruition in a big event.  Just like Steven Pal, Dan Weinstein and I had envisioned in April.

There were people sitting in the aisles, people crowded by the doors, it was standing room only and there wasn't much room to stand.

Huge speaker with Bill Maris of Google Ventures delivering a standout talk.

And 14 sharp and honed elevator pitches.

Many months of work, weekly speakers, Program for Entrepreneurs, planning, and rehearsals, and we had a great result.

3rd Entrepreneurship Week in the books.  This one was the best yet.

The Chordoma Foundation needs your generous support to continue making rapid progress towards new treatments and a cure. Please donate today to invest in a future for chordoma patients. Donations are tax deductible and very much appreciated!

   fund the cure

Dear Howie,

Today is a momentus day for the chordoma community - after thirteen years of research, the hunt for the genetic causes of chordoma has reached an important milestone with the discovery of a gene linked to familial chordoma. In a paper published today in Nature Genetics, investigators at Duke University and the National Cancer Institute report that duplication of the gene brachyury is a cause of familial chordoma.

Other inherited cancers are caused by mutations (misspellings in a gene), or gene deletion, but familial chordoma is the first linked to an extra copy of an entire gene. This groundbreaking discovery is potentially paradigm-shifting for cancer genetics, as it may indicate that gene amplification could be a risk factor for other types of cancer as well.

According to Dr. Michael Kelley, whose lab analyzed the DNA of familial chordoma patients, "this discovery is a classic example of where science answers one question but raises many, many more." Questions such as: why does brachyury amplification cause susceptibility to chordoma? is brachyury amplified in sporadic (non-familial) chordomas? do chordomas depend on brachyury to survive? can the effect of brachyury amplification be reversed? does reversing brachyury amplification kill chordoma cells?

While this discovery represents a major advance in the understanding of chordoma biology, only by answering these questions will researchers be able to determine what implications it has for the treatment of chordoma. The Chordoma Foundation stands ready to support these crucial follow-on studies, which will open a new frontier in chordoma research.

The importance of today's discovery cannot be understated. We salute and thank all the researchers involved in the familial chordoma study who have devoted so many years of their careers to uncovering the genetic mysteries of chordoma. We are glad to have provided funding to Dr. Kelley's lab over the past year, and are very grateful to all the donors who helped make this work possible.

Today I am more optomistic than ever before that a cure for chordoma can and will be found. No one knows how long that will take, but without a doubt today's announcement is a sign that research is accelerating in the right direction. Thank you for being a part of the journey to a cure - I look forward to sharing much more progress with you as the wave of projects sparked by this discovery start to bear fruit.

Onward!

Josh

For past presidents and winners - Event Summary for the Duke Start-up Challenge - Kickoff Event and Match Night

Hi everyone,

The student organizers had a great event last night for the Duke Start-up Challenge.  Thought we'd share with the past presidents and winners. Please let me know if there's anybody on this list we missed.

See attached for the program and the powerpoint.

We are looking to help take the Duke Start-up Challenge to the next level and to help all Duke entrepreneurs.  It is a core part of our vision to be one of the best places for students to start companies, and to eventually get into the same orbit as MIT and Stanford.

Also, for those of you who haven't connected yet, please take a look at the Duke Global Entrepreneurship Network (DukeGEN).  We have a happy hour coming up on Nov 17th in 8+ cities.  www.dukegen.com

Thanks,
Howie

Event Summary for the Duke Start-up Challenge - Kickoff Event and Match Night
Thurs, October 1, 2009, 6:30-9pm
Co-marketed by the Duke Entrepreneurship Education Series

Executive Summary:
The Duke Start-up Challenge (DSC) had a fantastic start to the 2009-2010 academic year.  With 140 registered on facebook and over 160 attending (estimate) it was an energetic, lively crowd. After a solid overview by Shalav Gupta, co-president of the DSC, there was a welcome by Adam Mangone, co-president of the Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital Club, www.dukeEVCC.com

Sponsors include Intersouth Partners, Wyrick Robbins, Hutchison Law Group, Hughes Pittman & Gupton, Square 1 Bank, iContact, and Palo Alto Software.

The main part of the night were the startup pitches, run by Katherine Ryzhaya, Team development lead for the DSC. There were over 20 startups that pitched, which ranged from:
-a few undergraduates including a freshmen at Duke who wanted to start a website that guided high school students on how to get into college.
-several Fuqua MBA students pitching startups based on technologies and innovations, including a medical device for to treat urinary incontincence , as well as a nanotechnology innovation that has created the world's longest carbon nanotubes
-a Master of Engineering Management student located in the DUhatch Student Business Incubator
-a few Duke PhD students wanting to bring their technologies out of their lab, including one prosthetic arm innovation recently profiled on 60 Minutes
-a few members of Research Triangle Park community with innovations looking for students to help them launch.

The formal part of the Kickoff Event was closed by Steve Pal, co-president of the Duke Start-Up Challenge.

Though it was late in the night, a surprising number of people (estimate of 75) stayed afterwards for the matching event.  Color coded dots on the name badges helped people with similar interests connect with one another.  Several of the presenters reported making good connections at the networking session.

The Kickoff event has been a part of the Duke Start-up Challenge in various forms, depending on the year, sometimes including pitches, sometimes not.  I think tonight's formula, with the mix of introduction, pitches, and networking, was a solid formula and is worth repeating in future years.

The Duke Start-Up Challenge was conceived of in 1999 and the first academic year of the competition was 2000-2001.

Photos and videos of the event will be available at www.picasaweb.google.com/eshipatduke and www.youtube.com/eshipatduke.

Additional thanks to the great volunteers that are part of the Duke Start-Up Challenge who helped last night, including (but not limited to) Daniel Weinstein, Peter Brown, Jason Henderson, Jason Begleiter, Vatsala Kabra, Michelle Marais, Jozef Krakora, Vignesh Loganthan, Danni Lin, Lalith Devulapalli, Kwame Johnson, Justin Healy, and Nick Donowitz. And thanks to Cate Smith at Meriwe-ther-Godsey and to the BMO (Glenn Reynolds, Jeff Sturkey, Scott Plueddeman, Chuck Roberson). Thanks to advisors and supporters Barry Myers, Jon Fjeld, and Larry Boyd. Apologies to any names left off accidentally.

Op-Ed from Prof. Aaron K. Chatterji

The Rahm Doctrine

By Aaron K. Chatterji

In the words of Rahm Emanuel, President Obama's Chief of Staff, the current economic crisis provides a unique "opportunity to do things you think you could not do before."

While critics have seized on his remark as a signal of an impending government takeover of the financial and health care industries, they might be missing the bigger picture. If the Obama Administration does manage to meaningfully reform these sectors, bankers and physicians may well be the ones with new opportunities to create greater prosperity for us all.

The upside of an economic downturn is that it reduces the opportunity cost of starting a business, since employment at established firms becomes less secure and lucrative. Indeed, iconic companies like GE, Microsoft and FedEx were all founded during recessions. Our current economic malaise, paired with reforms in the financial and health care sectors, could generate an entirely new class of entrepreneurs: bright and ambitious people whose abilities and aspirations initially led them to lucrative careers in finance and medical specialties.

It is this disproportionately large group of our best and brightest students who make tremendous candidates for entrepreneurship. They include the nearly 50 percent of Harvard's 2007 graduating class who went into finance and the rising number of medical students pursuing lucrative fields like plastic surgery and dermatology rather than primary medicine. Their individual decisions to start businesses could produce a massive reallocation of talent in the American economy, which could lead to the creation of enormous economic and social wealth and, potentially, lead us back to prosperity.

What, you might ask, would cause someone to leave a successful professional career to start a new company? First, the economics of these two professions may soon undergo radical changes. Lower compensation and increased regulation may motivate many bankers and specialist physicians to consider new careers. Already, this crisis has spawned a series of policy prescriptions designed to ensure that financial institutions take fewer risks, potentially making banking less exciting and less profitable.

Furthermore, the debate over how to reform our health care system has led to a renewed focus on physician pay, with specific proposals to increase the payments to primary care physicians at the expense of specialists.

Talented financial professionals could create significant social value by advising non-profit organizations on how to manage their budgets, helping community credit unions acquire new customers, even teaching financial literacy in our high schools. While it might be idealistic to think that many ex-bankers will take the massive pay cut required to become social entrepreneurs, far more could transition into fledging start-ups in emerging sectors like alternative energy. By untangling the complex financial puzzles around funding clean energy technologies, these ex-bankers might be more likely to generate innovations that actually create wealth.

Moreover, as American physicians grow weary of the endless paperwork and frivolous lawsuits endemic to industrialized medicine, more doctors are pursuing MBAs and founding start-up companies that aim to bring an innovative medical device to market or improve the flow of electronic patient records. My research on medical innovation finds that physicians are a valuable source of technology breakthroughs such as coronary stents, which they often pass along to large companies in return for a consulting or licensing fee. If health care reform does mean less remuneration for specialist physicians, increasing numbers may start to develop their best ideas on their own.

Policymakers also can do their part to encourage entrepreneurship, perhaps by providing subsidized entrepreneurial training to the unemployed bankers and dissatisfied doctors who might be our best bets to become tomorrow's Bill Gates or Sam Walton.

More entrepreneurship by intelligent, experienced and well-trained individuals would be a tremendous boon to the American economy. In the end, the "Rahm doctrine" may turn out to be prophetic, as the current crisis nudges some of America's most talented people to create economic and social value through entrepreneurship. That would contribute to a more prosperous future for us all.

Aaron K. Chatterji is an assistant professor at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and a fellow at the Center for American Progress.

Getting iContact to work with Google Sites / Google Apps

I was previously able to get iContact sign-up forms to work with Google Pages, but was having difficulty getting it to work with Google Sites. I was stuck for a while.  Apparently Google Sites doesn't let you add in scripts and posts the error "html content will be modified"

The workaround I came up with was to create a Google Form (asking for email address, first name, last name), embed this form in a Google Page, and set the Google Form to notify me whenever a form is submitted.

Then, occasionally, I'll download a csv from the Google Spreadsheet that's linked to the Google Form and upload it into my contacts list on iContact.

Not a perfect solution, but good enough for now.

Using Duke's SMTP server with Gmail

I'm using Gmail as my single inbox, so all of my Duke email comes into it.  One problem is that when I send emails from Gmail it says "on behalf of hwr2@duke.edu" as opposed to just "hwr2@duke.edu"

Lucked onto finding this post by Google on how to use Duke's / Fuqua's smtp servers to send my Gmail messages.

Since these messages are sent by Gmail's servers but "from" a non-Gmail address, we have to include your original Gmail username in the "Sender" field of the message header to comply with mail delivery protocols and help prevent your mail from being marked as spam. Most email programs just display the "From" address and not the "Sender" field, but some (including versions of Microsoft Outlook) show these messages as coming "From username@gmail.com On Behalf Of customaddress@mydomain.com" which really annoyed people.

We heard your request for another option that wouldn't show the "on behalf of" text loud and clear, and now there's a new option that does just that. Instead of using Gmail's servers to send the message, we'll use the servers where your other email address lives. Since Gmail isn't the originating domain, we don't have to include "Sender" info in the header. No more "on behalf of."

Here's the difference. All custom "From:" addresses used to work like this:

Now, if your other email provider supports POP and/or IMAP access, you can choose to send your message like this instead:

To switch to this new method, go to the Accounts page under Settings, and click "edit info" from the "Send mail as" section. Then choose the option to "Use your other email provider's SMTP servers."

We recognize that your other address might not have a server that you can use to send outbound messages — for example, if you use a forwarding alias rather than an actual mailbox, or if your other email provider doesn't support authenticated SMTP, or restricts access to specific IP ranges. For this reason, we've kept the original method as well. Check out our Help Center for further details on these two "send mail as" configuration options.

If you use Google Apps Premier or Education edition and would like to send mail as another address within your domain or within an aliased domain, no sweat. We do all the work behind the scenes so your original username won't be listed in the "Sender" header, and your recipients won't see "on behalf of."
